- Duterte and Trump has a phone conversation on Friday night, December 2
Duterte and Trump had an engaging and animated phone
conversation on Friday, December 2, at 10:30 p.m. (Manila time).
During their phone conversation, President Duterte
congratulated Trump for his election victory, while the US President-elect
wished him success in his crackdown against the illegal drug menace plaguing
the country.
As per the Inquirer, Trump told President Duterte that the
Philippines is doing the campaign against illegal drugs the right way.
“He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And
he wishes me well … in my campaign and he said that we are doing it as a
sovereign nation, the right way,” Duterte said in a statement on Saturday,
December 3.
The 71-year-old Duterte said he could sense a good rapport
with the US President-elect.
“I could sense a good rapport, an animated President-elect
Trump. And he was wishing me success in my campaign against the drug problem,”
he said.
He understood the way we are handling it and I said that
there’s nothing wrong in protecting a country.
It was a bit very encouraging in
the sense that I supposed that what he really wanted to say was that we would
be the last to interfere in the affairs of your own country,” he added.
Trump’s support to the Duterte administration’s war on drugs
is the exact opposite of the criticisms Duterte received from President Barack
Obama .
